A Homeowner's Plan

It doesn't matter how old you are or how old your home is. It makes no difference if you have just purchased, or if you have owned for years and years. Your home will either improve over time or it will deteriorate, and which course it takes is entirely up to you.

One of the simplest and most positive ways to make sure that your home does not fall into ruin is to schedule annual, monthly and weekly maintenance projects. Most budgets can allow for only one major project every year or two, so if a new bathroom, kitchen, or re-roofing is in your future, start saving for it now.

If you have projects that require the help of trained professionals, plumbers, electricians and so on, schedule something for them for once or twice each year.

Plan seasonal items first. In October book someone to do the furnace tune up. Sometime in the fall plants are often on sale. Pick up inexpensive landscaping items and surprise yourself with how easy it is to wind up with a beautiful yard after only a few years occasional labor.

Trapped inside during the rainy season? Your home will be a whole lot brighter if you wash the insides of your windows in January or February, rather than waiting for spring, when you'll be doing the outside of the panes and enjoying more time in the yard.

Need something inexpensive to do. Certainly you've cleaned your house on a regular schedule. But have you ever thought of cleaning the hard to reach places. Take one room at a time and go after the light fixture, the tops of the door and window molding, way under the bed, behind the refrigerator, behind the washer dryer, and behind the couch and entertainment center. You don't have to tackle all of these locations at one time. Just take an hour, once a week, and do something nice for your home.
