January 2009 Archives

On January 31, 2009 approximately 70-80 people met at Calvary Christian Assembly to take part in a Seattle Department of  Planning and Development informational meeting. Displayed on one wall of the large room was a series of posters delineating the Roosevelt Neighborhood Plan. Mark Troxel from the DPD explained the plan and what the purpose of the plan is. Roosevelt first developed a plan in the 1990's when there was talk of a light-rail system.  The Roosevelt Community lobbied heavily for the proposed route of the system to be along 12th Ave NE and that has come to pass. Since... Read more

On Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Calvary Christian Assembly at 68th St. and Roosevelt Ave an informational open house will be held between 10:00 and noon. The meeting is sponsored by the Seattle Department of Planning and Development. Of biggest concern to local residents is the proposed residential/commercial development at the intersection of 15th Ave NE and NE 65th St. The developers have indicated they intend to ask for zoning changes with heights up to 120 feet for the block immediately south of, and adjacent to Roosevelt High School. The meeting starts at 10:00 AM, and then there will be... Read more

The meeting a Calvary Christian Church on Jan 21, 2009 was attended by 80+ neighborhood residents. Jim O'Halloran opened the meeting with a synopsis of what had been covered in the past and reintroduced the developers Ed and John and the Public Relations representative and the developer's land use attorney. In addition two architects from Hewitt were on hand to help explain anticipated designs for the project should it get the go ahead from the powers that be. The big bombshell was dropped early by Ed when he told the group that the height they were looking for was 160... Read more
The next meeting with the Sisley property developer, the RooseveltDevelopment Group (RDG), will be held this Wednesday evening, January 21 at 7:00 PM at Calvary Christian Assembly.  The architect is expected to present at least one of the alternative building configurations to be studied in the EIS, as well as certain "streetscape" images.  We have been told that not all of the EIS alternatives are fully worked out, and that they will share as much as they can.  The developer team has been told that the community is concerned about a lack of detail so far, and that we must have sufficient opportunity after learning... Follow up: The Roosevelt Zoning Committee met at Roosevelt High School; Jim O'Halloran presiding.  One project discussed was the north half of the block bounded by NE66th on the north and by 12th Ave NE on the west. This development will consist of about 50 units of rental housing and it was reported that at least some of the units would be affordable to people with teacher level incomes. The next 1 ½ hours of discussion concerned state and local zoning with reference to the RDG and Sisley owned land. Jim explained a little about TOD's and TOC's, and what... Read more

The Redevelopment Project

On January 5 the Roosevelt Development Group (RDG) and their PR firm hosted another planning/disclosure meeting for the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association and several concerned citizens from adjacent Ravenna. This is the second meeting I've been to and I plan to attend as many future meeting as possible. Here is my take on the process. Hugh Sisley has acquired approximately 4.84 acres of property over the years. From appearances, he has chosen not to ever do any extensive repairs on his buildings, and for the most part they have deteriorated to "land value only" status. Most of the properties are along... Another community service opportunity presents itself on Saturday January 10. Volunteers will again meet from 10:00 to 12:30 to remove invasive plants and plant native species. Green Seattle Partnership sponsors these work parties and provides the necessary tools. Anyone is invited to join in this worthwhile endeavor, and especially encouraged to attend are the park's near-neighbors. You can search the Green Seattle Website to find out when a work party will be held in a park near you.    ... Read more
On January 5, 2009 at the Calvary Christian Assembly Church on Roosevelt at 7:00 PM the developers will again meet with the public. At the last meeting we (the community) asked for some architectural drawings of what might be proposed. We will continue the discussion about process and timing for the Environmental Impact Statement and what happens during that period. I'm hoping to see a plat of the properties under consideration and what the current zoning is vs. what the proposed zoning would be if the city approves the venture. If you plan to attend you might contact: Jim O'HalloranChair, RNA Land... Read more
