Recently in Ravenna Park - The Park Category

This Saturday the Friends of Ravenna Park will be working in the shade, starting at the bridge where the service road crosses the creek and the tributary stream comes in from the north, clearing the bindweed off the plantings and pulling other weeds along the way. The forecast is for hot weather but that part of the ravine stays cool in the morning and should not be too bad with the sun rising later than last month. If it gets too hot we will quit early. The Friends of Ravenna Ravine are having their usual 2nd Saturday work party from 10:00-12:30 Saturday April 10th. If you can help out, it would surely be appreciated. The weather looks sunny but the work could possibly be muddy. George says, "We will continue removing blackberry and ivy up the road from the kiosk beyond where the tributary stream comes in from the north. Plenty to do this weekend in Ravenna Park. Join the Friends of Ravenna Ravine from 10:30-12:30 on Saturday to work along the stream north of the ball field...southeast corner of the park. There is neighborhood work going on in the circle at the intersection of Naomi, 17th and 63rd. Just about anytime Saturday and Sunday. As ususal, on the second Saturday of the month, the Friends of Ravenna Ravine will meet from 10:00-12:30 on March 14. We will will be mulching the plants we planted last month.  We will be  working upstream from the kiosk past the pond.Meet at the Kiosk (near the Tool Box). Ravenna Park lower play field  in SE RavennaPark, North of NE 55th St. and North of the ball field.You will be most comfortable if you wear layers of clothes, and sturdy  shoes, that you don't mind getting  dirty.  Bring water and fair weather. Ravenna Park On Saturday there were 160 bare root and potted plants to get in the ground in the wetlands area around the stream and pond north of the softball field. Around 25 volunteers from toddlers to grandparents showed up to get the job done. The biggest turnout in a long time. Thank you all.   Join us on the second Saturday of every month to nurture native plant growth in our neighborhood namesake park. Planting Party in Ravenna Park

On Saturday, February 14th from 10:00-12:30 Friends of Ravenna Ravine  and Green Seattle welcome volunteers to help with the continuing effort of managing the flora of the park. This work party meets the second Saturday of every month, so please join us anytime. We've been pulling ivy and blackberries all winter but this month we will have a lot of plants to plant. Another community service opportunity presents itself on Saturday January 10. Volunteers will again meet from 10:00 to 12:30 to remove invasive plants and plant native species. Green Seattle Partnership sponsors these work parties and provides the necessary tools. Anyone is invited to join in this worthwhile endeavor, and especially encouraged to attend are the park's near-neighbors. Work Party December 13th

The weather promised to be nasty but the first winter storm of the season took a track to the north. George, Bill, Ann and I selected our tools and went at the blackberries, clematis, ivy and other invasives along Ravenna Creek just north of the soft ball field in the southeast end of the park.   The day turned out to be cool, but far from unbearable and we managed to get quite a bit done.     Volunteers are welcome anytime. Friends of Ravenna Ravine and Green Seattle Partnership will have another work day in Ravenna Park in January and in February... Ravenna Park Projects

You may have noticed the jute netting on the hillsides of the north slope of Ravenna Park. This is part of a contract project by the parks department. Ivy and other invasive plants were removed from the trees and the slopes between 15th Ave NE and 19th Ave NE. All of the discarded vegetation was hauled down to the service road and trucked out of the park. Ferns and other native plants were spared.
